I woke up on a plush couch in Encinitas, California. My friend Kai lives in Encinitas, it’s about 30 minutes north of San Diego. Kai and I met in kindergarten and since then we’ve always been close friends. He lived down the street from me and we would hang out all the time after school. In fifth grade he moved to Encinitas due to his parents getting new work there. Encinitas is a beautiful town right off the coast of the Pacific ocean. It has so much Californian culture. I spotted skateboarders all along the streets. Almost all the stores seem to be either Mexican food, surf shops, or funky retail stores. In the beginning of the day he took me around Encinitas and basically gave me a tour. He went from store to store telling me what’s best at each one, he also told me what made them unique. We passed a statue that was dressed up and Kai told me “That’s Cardiff Kook, people dress him up all the time just for fun.” I looked and was amazed. It was this statue of a surfer dressed in what seemed to be a green dress with a head of seaweed. I asked “How often do people dress him up” and Kai responded “I don't know, like whenever someone wants to.” Hahaha, I thought his response was so funny. He then further explained that almost every holiday people dress him up, and on anniversaries and stuff.
I love how the town had this type of culture to it. We headed down the coast towards San Diego to pick up Joe. The sky cleared up and it was beautiful out. Music playing, windows down, the smell of the ocean, truly the California vibe. Once we got Joe we all hung out and got IN-N-OUT Burger. This was not my first time there but holy crap the Burgers, Fries, and Shakes there are delicious. To anyone reading this, I highly highly recommend. As the sun set, we went to a local spot called the Look-Out. It’s basically a long driveway for cars to park and watch the sunset. Kai invited some other friends and together we all chilled out and had a good time. I am so grateful to have friends show me around a place that’s foreign to me. When the night came to a close, Joe and I headed to USD to go to our dorm and get some sleep. Just the one day we had before the event made our trip. Thank you Kai and thank you Encinitas.
